Jonny Lang @ Danforth Music Hall

Jonny Lang
Danforth Music Hall
July 10, 2007
A sweltering summer's evening evoked the nostalgia of Nashville at the newly renovated Danforth Music Hall. Victoria, BC natives Fairfield A.D. kicked things off with their smooth southern rock sound and vocal harmony between frontman Casey Marshall and Eric Paul on drums that made the hairs stand up on the back of your neck. Definitely a welcome surprise as an up and coming Canadian band, check out their tracks "I Can See It In Your Eyes" and "Blood on the Highway".

Now, if you've ever seen Jonny Lang live you're going to know what I'm talking about, but if you haven't you're going to have to trust me on this one. Lang becomes the guitar on stage. His vocal tonality can break your heart with his raw lower register and make you cry with his falsetto that can emulate every string on the guitar. While at the start of the show, I thought it might be a bit mechanical going from song to song without stopping to take in the thunderous applause, but Lang quickly put that notion to sleep when he beamed at the audience and offered his hellos and spoke to us after performing some new favourites from his latest CD Turn Around. Throughout the evening, Lang transported us to the honesty of the music itself, giving nods to his fellow talented musicians on stage and energizing the crowd with impactful lyrics and driven supernova-like passion that dripped off every note.

I loved how he made the show unique and included the organ, one guy in the crowd even got so into it he said, "take 'em to church!" and the audience laughed and continued with applause. Many in the crowd may not have realized, but Lang also performed an instrumental acoustic version of the hymn "I Love You Lord" showing who he really is playing music for and giving thanks toward on stage. As the night continued, the classics came out, with "Lie to Me" and "Breakin Me" getting the crowd all stirred up with hollers from the balcony to the floor.

For those of you fortunate enough to be in a city where Lang is performing on this tour, I strongly urge you to go and see him. For tour information please visit: www.jonnylang.com.
