Independent artists got a huge boost as they were honoured to kick-start Canadian Music Week with their own awards show. Simply called "The Indies", the Independent Music Awards, took place at Toronto's The Docks and featured performances from hometown favs to Australia's finest.

Champion's energetic start quickly had us forgive the long 45 minute delay. Cadence Weapon, Favourite Urban Artist winner, added some hip-hop next with some help from two turn tables and microphone. California newcomers, Hellogoodbye, gave us a new wave groove, while Priestess provided some hard core metal.

Hall of Fame inductees, Rough Trade proved they can still rock out as they belted out classics "Weapons" and "High School Confidential". Neverending White Lights came away with Single of the Year and performed a super sexy rendition of that single "The Grace".

Through all the great Canadian artists showcased tonight, it was a trio of hairy Australians who stole the show (pictured right). Wolfmother rocked the house with blazing versions of "Woman" and "White Unicorn". As expected these Aussies took home Favourite International Artist/Group.

Notably missing were screamo rockers, Alexisonfire, who garnered two Indies, Favourite Group or Duo and Favourite Album(Crisis). Lead singer, Dallas Green also took Video of the Year for "Save Your Scissors" from his solo venture "City And Colour". The group did send thanks via a video feed.

Hosted by Jully Black, who started out fresh and funny but quickly nose-dived into stale, the Indies also featured, Tara Slone, The Miniatures, Hostage Life, Danko Jones and Emm Gryner as just a few of the presenters.

After the awards show, Montreal's The Stills hit the stage for their mini-concert. Too bad it took so long to ready the stage and left people with little else to do but contemplate the drive home. Most left, but those who endured got a glimpse into the musicianship of these young up and comers.
