Smoothing Out a Summer Night

Corinne Bailey Rae
Mod Club
August 27th, 2006
It's a warm summer night late in the month of August, the kind of night that makes you grasp onto the fading pleasures of summer.

Her smooth, melodic voice, her passionate emotion and a room filled with audience members who can only be described as one thing, breathless. Take all these varying characteristics and you have the scene that was set at the Mod Club by shooting star, Corinne Bailey Rae.

The 26 year old U.K. native was all that I hoped she would be and more. Her blend of soul, jazz, blues and pop were such a perfect combination for her sweet and pure voice and for the intimate venue she performed in. Her style could be compared to a modern day Ella Fitzgerald, a powerhouse voice with a soft feminine side as well. Corinne delighted the audience by singing songs from her successful self-titled debut album. Her hit single "Put your Records On" had the audience singing along, while slower ballads such as "Till it Happens to you" and "Breathless" left the crowd amazed and impressed.

Her little personal stories in between the songs made you feel like you were sitting in a room alone having a conversation with your best friend. Her cute smile, unique look, strong sense of self and humble approach to her amazing talent all make her a refreshing change in the industry. She was obviously born to be singing the way she does and I'm just so glad I got to watch her do it.
