Take a step inside the Gladstone Hotel and you are instantly met with a collaboration of old mixed with new, modern d»cor with a sense of historic tradition, a place with a contemporary yet classic feel. With its history dating back over a hundred years, its no wonder the Gladstone is a major Toronto landmark, and the perfect venue for up and coming artists to showcase their talent. So was the case on May 5th, as the ballroom hosted a fabulous CD release party for The Parkas, a band affectionately described as indie pop beauties. Yet the clear highlight of the evening was opening act jackandginger, a duo comprised of Colleen Hixenbaugh (Jack) and Paul Linklater (Ginger). Masters of the drums and guitar, this band makes up for its lack of members with its personality. With a relaxed attitude and upbeat stage persona, these two were not only having the time of their life on stage, but also doing their best to ensure the crowd was feeling the same way. After they performed their first single, "Please be Kind", a perfect blend of harmony and melancholy, I was confident that this song, whenever it was released, would instantly become a success. Another highlight of the set included the cover of the1963 hit song "Be My Baby", originally recorded by The Ronettes. Jackandginger's version not only delivered an edgy guitar vibe to the once bubblegum pop song, but made it loveable all over again. Jackandginger are looking forward to touring this summer throughout Canada and after Friday's performance, I am pretty sure I will want to follow them wherever they may go.
