Great Big Sea

Album Title: Something Beautiful
Release Date: February 24, 2004
Genre: Rock
Okay, you know what? I am so sick of Canadian bands that begin their careers and sound awesome, and then bow to commercial pressures and just get worse and worse. Yes, Great Big Sea, that means you. Where are all those cool Celtic instruments? Why have you shoved them into the background of all your songs? What's with the over-polished pop hooks and prozac-induced sunny-ness? You were the next Spirit of the West! Providers of beer-drinking music for the masses! What the hell happened?

The one bright, shining moment on Something Beautiful is Helmethead; the all-Canadian ode to hockey players everywhere…with Celtic flavour fully engaged. That is a GREAT song and almost worth the $20 by itself. But the rest is…well, let's just say the enjoyment meter was reading a little low. Please join me in hoping the Great Big Sea have moved beyond their easy listening phase, and will return to full Helmethead glory on the next album.
