Is it just me or do Relient K sound a bit like the Beach Boys on this album? It’s not a bad thing that the Ohio natives jingles have a delightfully Beach Boyish glow to their vocal harmony (such as on “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”) it’s actually a part of what makes this album such an attractive Christmas CD – something familiar mixed with Relient K’s complete originality in arrangement and songwriting. When you start the album you think you’re in for just a “nice bunch of Christmas songs”, but the guys liven the arrangements up and create some fun originals for the masses. The band photos on the album sleeve are priceless with the band posing in angel wings and hugging a teddy bear. “Merry Christmas, Here’s to Many More” is a potent narrative and says, “And living out my days alone, well, that had been my deepest fear/But you promised you won’t leave/I look towards the east and see a star/Jesus Christ, it’s blessed my life to know just who you are/you are my hope”.

A very punk rock version of “Angels We Have Heard on High” is great and where Theissen comments on a “partridge and a pear tree” in “12 Days of Christmas where he says they’re the most terrible Christmas gifts ever is priceless. “I Celebrate the Day” is one of the best and most insightful tracks on the album with, “From the first day that you opened your eyes, did you realize that you would be my Savior?” All of the songs add a unique element both uplifting and original and traditional all mixed, which is the best way to make a new Christmas album. If there is a new Christmas album you should have playing this Christmas season it’s Relient K’s Let it Snow Baby…Let it Reindeer.
