Whether a reference to their home state's proximity to the Pacific or an indicator of their deep and dreamy sound, the moniker the four young lads of Lost Ocean chose for themselves is fitting. Hailing from Bakersfield, California, the band creates music that sits somewhere between emo and power pop, with the forlorn vocals and jangly guitars meeting at a crossroads. The best example of this mish-mash is found with "Just Glide" which sounds like Matt Pryor of the Get Up Kids fronting Keane. The centerpiece of Lost Ocean's self-titled debut is the lyrics, which are simplistic and straightforward but still entirely earnest and heartfelt. It's all about making it from those teen years into the real world, and just trying to hang onto those fleeting precious moments of life. "There's a light inside / Inherent in all life / There is a fine place in all our hearts" sings Jeff Gray on "Lights." See, they may sound awfully sad, but really, Lost Ocean is full of hope.
