Genre: Pop/Rock
It's been two years since the last solo release from Julie Doiron, and the veteran musician didn't let us down (not that anyone thought she would). Woke Myself Up boasts 11 freshly recorded tracks from the New Brunswick-based singer/songwriter, and Doiron's trademark drawl is still as deadpan as ever. Three-quarters deep into the album comes the bass-heavy "Don't Wanna Be/Liked By You," which is immediately followed by the whimsical twee of "Dark Horse." The subtle mix of genres is partnered with Doiron's straightforward lyrics, and unsurprisingly, the result is pleasing to the ears. Seeing as two of the best tracks are near the end of the record, it's almost unnecessary to state that the 30-minute LP is devoid of any filleróbut let it be stated nonetheless. Long-time fans of Doiron will find it easy to love Woke Myself Up.
