Black History Month couldn't have been embraced better with Amazing Grace opening in theatres on February 23. Amazing Grace is a film that tracks the life of William Wilberforce, a British politician and philanthropist who was a leader in the parliamentary campaign against the slave trade. This may seem like any other situation, where people stand up for those who are marginalized by society today, but in 1787 it was a big deal when a white man of Wilberforce's stature stood up for the voiceless in a slave trade system run by sheer disrespect for our fellow human being just because of the colour of their skin.

It's amazing how much appearance has always mattered to our society. If only we had known that less or more melanin in our skin was what separated us then, not social class or theories about our level of development, maybe things would have been different, but then again, perhaps this sort of triumph over evil was necessary to hold a mirror up to the very essense of our unchanging, prideful nature as human beings.

With Wilberforce, his personal triumph that lead to the abolition of slavery came when He accepted Jesus in 1785. He resolved to commit his future life and work wholly in the service of God and was counseled to remain in politics by the church. From 1791 onward, Wilberforce worked to abolish the slave trade at every single Parliamentary meeting, finally getting the bill passed to stop the African slave trade in 1806.

Amazing Grace: Music Inspired By The Motion Picture has a diverse line up of popular artists singing the lyrics to classic hymns in a delightfully contemporary format. Artists include Jars of Clay, Martina McBride, Smokie Norful, Nicole Nordeman, Natalie Grant, and Chris Tomlin with the Wilberforce Choir singing such captivating lyrics as, "My chains are gone/I've been set free/my God my Savior has ransomed me/and like a flood/His mercy reins/unending love/amazing grace."
