Matt Brouwer

Album Title: The B-Sides Recording Vol. 1
Release Date: 2006

Genre: Acoustic
Having recently been nominated at the Shai Awards and set to perform, it seems the word on the street for Canadian inspirational rising talent making waves is Matt Brouwer. He reminds me of a male version of Bethany Dillon; an accomplished musician with a gentle spirit and voice.

This recording is special, as it's a mixture of recordings that have been ressurected from Brouwer's catalogue, songs that moved him but never made it on any album release from his college years up until his move to Nashville. On the CD, Brouwer is seen transcending classic hymns amd his own musical stylings for his current generation on the b-sides recording vol. 1 who need to hear the peace of the Gospel with as much emphasis and sincerity on their own lives as when their parents heard it years ago. He accomplishes this with soft piano, guitars, and an almost unplugged sound to his acoustic numbers. A stand out track is "(Nails) Forever)" with stunning background vocals by Jill Paquette and Ruth Eliason. "The Source" is also one of the most peaceful, serene tracks I've heard in a while, I can see how it would inspire quiet time with God up at the cottage or in a church near you.

This album is perfect for a somber day where you're looking for a pick me up and equally as good for a youth group to use in their worship service. Brouwer is one of a few extremely talented Canadian inspirational artists out to blow the dust off the Gospel and make it relevant to his generation, because it is. So, more power to him for inspiring us with a hope that's everlasting.
