Skippy and the Bellbottoms

Album Title: What Happened To Turn Signals?
Release Date:
Genre: Rock
If there's one thing this humble scribe is a sucker for, it's the sound of rain hitting the ground and the screeching noise made when chords are changed on an acoustic guitar - and both are found on one glorious opening track that belongs to the ridiculously and misleadingly named Skippy and the Bellbottoms. If there's one thing this writer isn't a sucker for, it's modern-day instrumental pieces, and yet "Big Head Syndrome" shrunk mine considerably, probably because it lacks one itself.

Although his past musical life was in the rock scene, young Skippy mastermind Jeff Maynard has fallen into stylings for What Happened To Turn Signals?. And although it seems like a Flaming Lips song should come pouring out of the speakers when a song titled "Marshmallow Shoes" hits the playlist, it's actually plaintive, introspective, acoustic sounds that spring forth. And therein lays the main fault of an otherwise solid album - Maynard tries too hard to be quirky. After all, Finger Eleven didn't get anywhere until they stopped calling themselves the Rainbow Butt Monkeys. Hint. Hint.
