The fourth longplayer from California artist Daedelus is something of an anomaly in the modern world. With no shortage of guest spots, including MF Doom, Prefuse 73, and Mike Ladd, Exquisite Corpse manages to put hip hop in a romantic light. Not romantic in the sappy all-American white female singer/songwriter sense, but in the wonderfully idealistic, rap-is-still-alive-and-thriving-no-matter-what-MTV-would-have-you-believe sense.

Helping to establish what the likes of Kanye West, k-os, Outkast, and MF Doom are bringing to the forefront, Daedelus has arranged an all-star team of musicians to demonstrate that hip hop has the ability cater to the masses on a surprisingly intellectual level. No hos, Cristal, or Big Mac spots to be found, the standout track is easily "Cadavre Exquis" on which Daedelus collaborated with underground French rap trio TTC. The laid back "Welcome Home" comes in at a close second, with the rest of the album pulling in third. Most of the tracks do stand on their own, but they sound so much better as a 50-minute block of ingenuity.
