Genre: Hip Hop
The Gym Class Heroes hail from upstate New York and while they might be hip-hop on paper and in theory, they're really too unique and weird to be pigeonholed as such. The Papercut EP is a prelude to something or other, and much like the Roots before them, the Heroes eschew traditional hip-hop turntables and beat boxes in favour of guitars and drums. And the lyrics? Total WTF, dood!!! The first track "Taxi Driver" name drops Death Cab for Cutie, Bright Eyes, My Chemical Romance, Jimmy Eat World, the Postal Service, Jimmy Eat World, At the Drive-In, Taking Back Sunday, Jets to Brazil, Hot Water Music, Story of the YearÖ and it's two bluddy minutes long! Totally bizarre, like an issue of Spin magazine set to limp beats. The other three tracks are pretty unremarkable but they're short at leastóit's something, I guess. An interesting crossover attempt but the music falls a bit flat in its attempts to branch out. The Gym Class Heroes are too soft to appeal to the ghetto youth yet too earnest to appeal to the jaded indie rock types. Maybe the emo kids will take the Heroes in, give 'em a good meal and show 'em some hot loving from the oven.
