Warren Zevon is one of those artists who twaddle the mainstream just long enough to become a pseudo-household name and enjoy the intangible riches provided from the dreaded "critical acclaim" collar. He's also dead. Zevon died in September of 2003 after a long battle with lung cancer and a year after the fact, an impressive array of friends and supporters have come together to pay tribute to Zevon in verse on Enjoy Every Sandwich: The Songs of Warren Zevon. You've got oldsters (Bob Dylan, Ry Cooder), fellow singer/songwriter types (Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt), shameless corporate rockers (Don Henley, Jackson Browne) and even actors (Adam Sandler, Billy Bob Thornton). Throw in Jill Sobule of "I Kissed a Girl" fame plus a brand new recording from The Pixies and it definitely makes for a strange brew. Zevon's best-known track, "Werewolves of London" was for whatever reason handed over to Sandler but to his credit, he gives a pretty straight rendering of a song that is pretty goofy to begin withóno surprise since Zevon was famous for blending liberal doses of humour and the odd political jab into much of his songwriting. The Wallflowers do a good job with the driving "Lawyers, Guns and Money", Pete Yorn plays "Splendid Isolation" with a half smile and in case your wondering, The Pixies take on "Ain't That Pretty At All" is quite pretty in an ugly fashion. Of course, this wouldn't be a tribute album to a dead guy without some somber moments thrown in. Springsteen's live version of "My Ride's Here" is a slice of affected simplicity and the Jorge Calderon/Jennifer Warnes duet on "Keep Me In Your Heart" (from Zevon's final studio effort The Wind) is an absolutely beautiful song played seamlessly. Bound to become an artist appreciated more in death than in life, this 15-song eulogy is the perfect tourniquet to keeps the memories of Warren Zevon in place.
