John Frusciante

Album Title: A Sphere In The Heart Of Silence
Release Date: November 23, 2004
Genre: Rock
Recorded in only five days, we have reached RHCP guitarist John Frusciante's sixth solo album of 2004. A forest of eyebrows raised when Frusciante proclaimed his intention to release an album a month back in the spring and the whispers of critics were surely bemused at the logistics. He may be in a damn famous band but how would he keep it fresh?

Several releases later and Frusciante has not disappointed. His albums have explored every facet of his emotional and intricate style, making a mockery of any aspersions cast and carving a name as something other than the guitarist in the Chili'. But where to go on your sixth album in almost as many months? Well, enlist a friend who just so happens to be a bit of a musical prodigy, plug in your Casio keyboard and get creating. A Sphere In The Heart Of Silence is a work that will confound many. Frusciante and Klinghoffer veer away from convention and all but forget about the existence of guitars, instead taking influence from the dark ambiance of Vincent Gallo and the experimental electronica of acts such as Tangerine Dream.

The Klinghoffer voiced Communique encompasses perfectly the vision of this opus; as his gentle tones melt into a haunting backdrop of piano and synth, all preconceptions disappear into the atmospherics, leaving you with something new to consider. Eclectic is too shallow a word for this album, yet strangely it is on closing track My Life that Frusciante seems at his most diverse. A beautifully simple piano melody and his reflective vocals are all that are present and despite the deeply personal nature of early releases you feel almost at one with the artist - quite a feeling in context to the album. There is no chance of this appealing to everyone, but give it a try and open your mind. Beauty is a simple yet complicated thing.
