French Crackdown on Illegal File Sharing

Published: 2004-07-30
The latest country to join in the fight over illegal file sharing is France. What sets the French apart in the legal battle is their approach. In a charter that is backed by the French government French Internet Service Providers, record companies, musicians have agreed to co-operate with authorities to crackdown on people illegally sharing files over the internet. French Internet Service Providers have agreed to terminate a pirate's service once a court order has been issued.

The charter also states that internet and music companies will increase efforts to launch legal music sharing services and increase the number of French songs available for downloading to 600,000 double the current number.

In signing the charter French authorities hope that tougher laws will not be needed.
