Celebrity Albums Take The Spotlight

Published: 2004-07-23
In an era when celebrities are looking for as many outlets as possible to get their name and face out to the public, music and record contracts have become a popular medium. Singing actors is nothing new to the industry. In the early days of film the "rat pack" (Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., and Dean Martin) all made movies, but the market was not so flooded then as it is today. In the 70s "Starsky and Hutch" star David Soul had a successful singing career. "Knight Rider" star David Hasselhoff was a superstar singer in Germany. And music shows like "The Monkees" and "The Partridge Family" produced major hits and careers for the actors.

What makes things different today is the pool of talent entering the record business. Record companies are not interested in signing anyone who isn't already in the spotlight. The record executives are more interested in the marketing value of a client and not the talent. An already established star requires little marketing. Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohen, supermodel Carla Bruni, Minnie Driver, and Jai Rodriguez of "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" are all working on new albums. There used to be a saying – It's not what you know, it's who you know. Now it's more like talent doesn't matter as long as the name and the face are out where everybody can see it; and only Hollywood has that.
