Of Modest Mice and Walkmen

Published: 2004-07-19
As sad as it may be, Lollapalooza has been cancelled and will stay cancelled until people realize that a festival featuring Morrissey, Sonic Youth, Broken Social Scene and the Flaming Lips (to name but a few) should NOT be cancelled. We may be waiting until Judgement Day for the masses to realize this, but thankfully some of the shafted Lolla bands have decided to bring their music to smaller groups of fans anyways.

Two of those bands are Washington's Modest Mouse and New York five-piece the Walkmen. The two groups are teaming up for a series of double-billed dates, although sadly none of them will be taking place in Canada. What will be taking place in this country of ours are two solo Modest Mouse dates, and one solo Walkmen date. The Walkmen will be playing Toronto the day after Modest Mouse, so it's almost like they were double-billed, but not quite. You can always pretend.

Both bands will be coming fresh off the European festival circuit when they start their North American dates, so they should be in tip-top shape. The album that the Walkmen will be supporting during their tour is 'Bows & Arrows', the group's major-label debut. Modest Mouse on the other hand, will be supporting their sixth full-length album called 'Good News For People Who Love Bad News'. Released in April, the record features the hit single 'Float On', which may just succeed in helping those masses to realize that Lollapalooza should never have been canned.

Upcoming Modest Mouse dates:

August 04 Toronto - Kool Haus
August 06 Montreal - The Rialto

The Walkmen's Canadian date:

August 05 Toronto - Lee's Palace
