Conductor Alfonso Leads Underwater Music Concert

Published: 2004-07-13
As a part of an Underwater Music Festival, Key West Symphony conductor maestro Sebrina Maria Alfonso led the more than 400 musical divers and snorkelers in a concert on Looe Key Reef.

Music was piped down under the water as the musicians attired in sequins and tuxedos "played" their instruments including a trombonefish, harmoni-crab, and a manta-lin.

The Underwater Music Festival was created in 1984 as a cultural event to combine music and one of the natural beauties of the Keys – the coral reefs. Maestro Alfonso who has conducted the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Pops, and the Tokyo Philharmonic said, "I can put conducting an underwater orchestra on my resume' now." Alfonso used a big red snorkel for her baton.
