Official UK Chart Company Ranks Legal Downloads

Published: 2004-06-29
The Official Chart Company has decided to capitalize on the popularity of downloading music. The new Official Download Chart will launch in September in the UK. The Chart Company will tabulate the top downloaded music across the UK from the legal music download services. Downloading music has become very popular over the past year. It is an essential part of music in the future and should have a way to keep track of what is happening among the online services.

The Chart Company tested the charts this week. The number one song was "Bam Thwok" by The Pixies. "Bam Thwok" is the first new song by The Pixies in over 12 years and is only available on Apple iTunes.

I think this is a great way for the music industry to regain control over their releases. In fact, the new trend in music downloading may even make it possible for artists to do their own promotion and sell CDs through their web site without the bother of getting signed to a label that would do it for them, even commercial acts. Interesting things are happening, and I think they will continue to make the music business re-focus on what's important in the industry; the music itself.
