The Vines Cancel North American Tour

Published: 2004-06-10
It looks as if old problems that the Vines have had in the past are coming back to haunt the group. The Australian band doesn't have a very good track record when it comes to live performances; many dates fall through and a lot of gigs end with a band member storming off stage halfway through the set.

So when a person looks at the Vines' history, it really isn't surprising that they've just cancelled a massive amount of North American dates. The reason cited for the band pulling out of the shows is that the members are now able "to take a break and deal with the mental and physical exhaustion issues they currently face".

It probably doesn't help that tensions have been building within the band, and bassist Patrick Matthews was the latest member to ditch a performance just one song in. Because of that incident the band was forced to cancel a few dates in Australia. Although things appear stormy from the outside, a spokesperson for the Vines assures that the band has not broken up.

The dates that the Vines cancelled were a series of arena shows as opening act for American band Incubus. There are over 60 stops scheduled for the North American leg of the tour, a daunting amount of dates for any band, and for one as dysfunctional as the Vines, nearly impossible to fathom. Obviously Incubus is still going ahead with the tour, but has not released any information as to who will replace the Vines.

The Incubus tour, during which they will be supporting their latest album 'A Crow Left of the Murder', has only one Canadian date scheduled – July 6th at the Air Canada Center in Toronto.
