The Stars Finish Recording

Published: 2004-06-09
Canadian band the Stars have just finished recording their newest album in Montreal. During the making of the record the band worked with Tom McFall, who is a member of London, England band Serial P.O.P. The new record will be the four-piece's third studio album.

For the very first time, the Stars cut material in a real recording studio. Usually the band just lays down tracks in a band member's house (that has bad ventilation at that). The move from bedroom to studio will surely give the new record a sharper, cleaner sound than their previous albums.

Although the Stars are a Montreal band, none of the members grew up there. All four members are really from Toronto, but oddly enough their music is not. The Stars' first recording 'Nightsongs', was actually created in New York City (what can they say, they're a well travelled band). When the line-up of the Stars was firmly cemented in 2002, the members relocated to Montreal, and the band then created the achingly beautiful 'Heart'.

The Montreal atmosphere obviously agreed with the Stars, as 'Heart' became their standout album; it was even nominated for a Juno this year. The record was up for Best Alternative Album of the Year, but was beat out by Buck 65's 'Talkin' Honky Blues'. Although 'Heart' didn't win the award, it had no trouble finding praise on both sides of the Atlantic. The dreamy melodies featured on the record caused reviewers to recall bands like Saint Etienne and Belle & Sebastian when rapturously speaking about the Stars.
