Save Canadian Music Lobbyists hold a NXNE Town Hall Meeting

Published: 2004-06-02
In an election year almost nothing escapes political discussion or manipulation. The music industry is no exception. As a part of the NXNE music festival, on June 11 lobbyists for Save Canadian Music are holding a town meeting. On March 31, 2005 the funding musicians and the music industry receives from the government will cease when the Department of Canadian Heritage's contract with FACTOR – The Foundation To Assist Canadian Talent on Record – expires. If funding to FACTOR is not restored the Canadian Music Industry as a whole and the Canadian economy by extension will suffer. Nearly half of the Juno Award winners in 2004 were aided by grants from FACTOR. Some 60 percent of ALL music by Canadian musicians in any music store in Canada has had help from FACTOR at some point.

A website has been created – www.savecanadianmusic.com - for music fans who want to help in the campaign to save the Canadian music industry. In an election year the politicians need to be made aware of the forthcoming tragedy if FACTOR does not receive funds to aid the nation's musicians.

The Town Meeting will be moderated by manager for The Trews and Boy, Tony Wanagas. Scheduled to participate in the panel are:
Heather Ostertag from FACTOR
Pierre Lalonde from Heritage Canada
Sarmite Bulte – The Liberal MP – High Park/Parkdale riding
Sum 41 producer and manager Greig Nori
President of Linus Entertainment Geoff Kulawick

The Town Meeting will be held at the Toronto Holiday Inn on Friday June 11 at 10am.
