'Nico' Biopic Coming Soon

Published: 2004-06-02
Set for production is a biopic set around the life of model-singer-actress Nico. Vagabond Films is the company behind the movie, and has recruited director David Mackenzie for the film. The script of 'Nico' will be adapted from a biography of the chanteuse that was written by James Young.

The writer's behind putting the biography to screen are David and Janet Peoples, who also wrote 'Twelve Monkeys'.

Nico may be best known for her singing stint with the Velvet Underground. The Underground was under the management of Andy Warhol when the renowned artist suggested that the band include the blonde on their debut album. The group, led by Lou Reed, consented and the German vixen provided vocals for three songs – including 'Femme Fatale' – on the record that has come to be known as the 'Banana Album'.

The biopic will also feature the members of the Velvet Underground (Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison and Maureen Tucker) during the time period Nico spent with the influential band.

Also included in the film will be Nico's involvement with Andy Warhol's New York art scene and her consequential solo career after her departure from the VU. Most certainly the biopic will also feature the massive heroin addiction that eventually became the center of the star's life. 'Nico' will tell the story of the chanteuse all the way up to her death in Ibiza, Spain, from a cerebral haemorrhage after a bicycle accident. What a way for a cultural icon to go.
