The Viennese Vegetable Orchestra

Published: 2004-06-01
A group of Austrian musicians have given a whole new meaning to the idea of playing with your food. The nine piece orchestra of three women and six men play their vegetables – literally. The Viennese Vegetable Orchestra played 40 kilograms of various vegetables fashioned into musical instruments. A carrot flute, leek violin, pumpkin double bass, and a cucumber saxophone were among the "instruments". Non-organic grown vegetables make the best "instruments". Since size, water content, and texture are vital to achieving a proper sound, the "instruments" are created only an hour before concert time.

The orchestra entertained a German audience with original tunes on original "instruments".

So the next time you hear someone say "don't play with your food", try not to take them too seriously.
