Jamie Cullum: Hottest Rising Jazz Star

Published: 2004-05-17
Cross a rat packer and a screaming rock and roll band and you have Wiltshire, UK native Jamie Cullum. The 24 year old had one goal, to master Eddie Van Halen's guitar solo in "Thriller". The long haired guitar player didn't begin piano or playing jazz until he was in college. "I'm not wearing a suit, slicking my hair back, and doing the whole razzmatazz," said Cullum. "When I play standards, I play them in a modern way." Doing them in a modern way may include shouting the lyrics to Cole Porter's "I Get a Kick Out of You" while standing on the top of the piano.

Cullum released "Twentysomething" last year. Before the album was released in North America, it had sold over one million copies. Cullum was recently awarded the Jazz Awards' Rising Star Award by the BBC.

Two of Cullum's original songs are currently making the rounds on Canadian radio.
