The Rolling Stones Bring 'Satisfaction'

Published: 2004-05-12
Exactly 39 years ago today, in Chicago, Illinois, 'The World's Greatest Rock & Roll Band' recorded what would become their biggest hit. That song was '(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction', a tune that everyone in the world surely knows the words to, whether or not they know who it's by. And of course, it was written and recorded by the Rolling Stones themselves.

'Satisfaction' would be unleashed upon the world just a few months after it was cut, eventually replacing the Four Tops' 'I Can't Help Myself' at the top of the American charts. The song would sit in its lofty position for four weeks before being knocked out by the song 'I'm Henry VIII, I Am' (understandably; who doesn't love a song about Henry VII). '(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction' went on to make an appearance at the top of the Stones' home charts, staying for two weeks at number one in the U.K.

Even though the song was released nearly 40 years ago, it hasn't lost an ounce of its potency. At least one artist from every decade since the songs creation has recorded their own version of '(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction', renewing it for their own generation. The song has been covered by the likes of Tom Jones, The Troggs, Television, Devo, Cat Power and even (unfortunately) Britney Spears. There's no way that 'Satisfaction' will ever abandon the music world, thanks to the Rolling Stones.

After Mick Jagger and Keith Richards penned the tune, a person has to wonder whether they knew the impact that singular song would have on the world of music. Although the Glimmer Twins created many more classic songs, '(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction' will always be the Stones song that everyone remembers. Even the people who don't want to remember it. And even those who might hate it. And the people who have to study it in school a few hundred years from now. And the ones in that crazy future land who just like really good music.
