When Nine Inch Nails Attack

Published: 2004-05-12
Nine Inch Nails will soon be returning with a fresh batch of songs. Trent Reznor is currently stuck in a recording studio somewhere in the U.S., laying down tracks for the upcoming album. Legendary producer Rick Rubin (AC/DC, the Beastie Boys, Johnny Cash, RHCP, and the list goes on for miles) has been called in to work with NIN for the first time. The record is reportedly being called 'Bleed Through' but there's no word yet on a possible release date.

It's been quite a while since the last NIN album; 'The Fragile' was released 5 years ago in 1999. It's not surprising that there's been such a huge gap between albums for the band since 'The Fragile' was only NIN's second album after debut 'Pretty Hate Machine' in 1989. Fifteen years in the biz and a soon-to-be four album catalogue; you do the math.

The only real member of Nine Inch Nails, Trent Reznor, could be considered THE man of industrial rock. Even the more mainstream and subsequently more famous Marilyn Manson once looked up to Reznor for all of his musical wisdom. Reznor has always managed to keep his music far from redundant as some of his contemporaries – no finger pointing – haven't quite been able to do. The dark melodies and sometimes shocking lyrics of Nine Inch Nails have pushed the envelope of what is considered acceptable further than many of today's costumed shock rockers ('Closer', anyone?).

Now might be the perfect time for the band to release new material, as an older NIN song has recently received a new breath of life. On his final album, the late great Johnny Cash recorded a version of Reznor's highly emotional song 'Hurt'. The tragic song tugged at the heartstrings of pretty much everyone, and the video went on to be nominated for quite a few awards.

Just to prove he's not as tough as his music may make him seem, Reznor is rumoured to have cried the first time he saw the video for Johnny Cash's cover of 'Hurt'. But then again, didn't we all?
