Teena Marie Feels Good To Be Back

Published: 2004-05-11
The Rick James protigee' has bucked the typical stereotypes her entire career. Born Mary Christine Brockert she became Teena Marie and crossed the colour lines of R&B with her voice and guitar. In the early days of Motown, the record company would not put Marie's face on the album covers because they were worried about how audiences would react to a white female playing and singing funky soul music. The record company had nothing to worry about. The artist had a number of hits.

Thirteen years later Teena Marie has another hit record. While she cut back on performing to raise her daughter Alia Rose. Marie also felt that she did not fit in with the newer sound. She is back touring with Rick James, has a new hit single "Still in Love", and a new album "La Dona" which will be out May 11. Alia Rose contributes her guitar playing on two songs on the album. "It feels good to be back," said a 48 year old Teen Marie.
