The Unpredictable Nellie McKay

Published: 2004-05-11
"I've always been a troublemaker. Especially when I believe in something," said 19 year old Nellie McKay (pronounced MacHigh). The multi-talented teenager was born in London and raised in the US. She makes her home in the Harlem area of New York City.

Nellie is unconventional in every way. She is a vegetarian who doesn't like vegetables and she doesn't own a TV. When it comes to her music, she lives by one rule – never play a song the same way twice. The concept behind this idea stems partly from the fact that Nellie likes to keep things fresh; but she also has trouble remembering song lyrics, especially her own.

At 17 Nellie was already performing in bars and giving piano and voice lessons. Nellie recalls being fired from one such bar when she wanted to play Christmas songs in August when people could appreciate them because they weren't sick of them yet.

Nellie sings; writes music; and plays the piano, saxophone, cello, and mallet percussion. As a result she was in numerous bands at the same time in high school. But oddly enough music was not her favourite subject.

Nellie released her debut album in February. She co-produced the album with Geoff Emerick of Beatles fame. She also designed the album's cover art. Nellie's debut album "Get Away From Me" is an unprecedented double CD. Nellie has plans to release her second album in October.

Currently Nellie McKay is on tour. She will be opening for Sting on his European tour.
