Matt Mays Records and Tours Once Again

Published: 2004-05-07
Matt Mays and the members of his backing band El Torpedo have been very busy little bees of late. The group has headed back into the recording studio to create the follow up to Mays' self-titled solo debut released last year. Matt Mays found himself a nice little studio in his native Halifax to lay down tracks with producer Don Smith (Tom Petty, U2, Bob Dylan). No word yet on a possible release date.

Not only are they recording, but Matt Mays & El Torpedo have added more dates to their never-ending cross-country tour. It would be impossible for anyone to say the band has not paid their dues (if you saw any Canadian act this year, there's a good chance Mays was the one opening up for them); they have 20 gigs coming up, and that's just for the remainder of May and the month of June. Over the next two months Matt Mays & El Torpedo will be featured on the same bill as the Thrills, Blue Rodeo, and Sam Roberts. In addition to playing on the same stage as these musicians, the band will be making an appearance at NXNE.

At only 24, Matt Mays has already accumulated quite a good musical track record. He was originally part of Halifax's own band the Guthries, a group that came highly acclaimed both inside and out of Canada's borders. Eventually Mays decided to go it alone, and picked up the members of El Torpedo along the way. Now he and his new band find themselves crisscrossing back and forth across the country, playing Mays' tunes for anyone who will listen.
