Last summer, professional soccer players, Ross Smith and his friend Dean Ruddy went from scoring on the field in the UK to hugging the likes of Jesse Jackson on the streets of Chicago; all to benefit underprivileged children at Chicago's Dreams for Kids charity. Ross Smith says of the idea, "Dean and I were in this massive shopping mall [in England] and were getting restless, so we went into this bookstore and opened up the Guinness Book of World Records and said ' lets break a record!" Two regular guys who play soccer then began their quest to hug and give back to local communities.
This year, Ross and Dean are heading downtown Toronto to hug any and all in their path for Chicago's Dreams for Kids again and the local charity, Feed the Children. Canada's Feed the Children says of its mandate that they, "work with local partners in Canada and around the world to enhance the well-being of children and the self-sufficiency of their families and communities."
Ross and Dean will be in Toronto at the North West corner of Yonge-Dundas Square from 11am on Thursday May 29 (tomorrow!) until 11am on Friday May 30, so on your lunch break stop by and give these guys a hug or two for charity. The duo will also have Embrace Race t-shirts for $15 available, which will get the recipient into the afterparty this Friday May 30 at the Hardball Café in Milton, Ontario. For those not buying a t-shirt, but still wanting to attend the afterparty the donation/cover will be $10 at the door.
The DJs and band's set to perform starting at 8pm at the Hardball Cafe include house DJ PlusGroove and old school/R&B DJ Analog Soundsystem. Bands include According to Simon (www.myspace.com/accordingtosimon), One Grand Canyon (www.myspace.com/onegrandcanyon), Khalel (http://www.myspace.com/khalelonline), and Kerr Smith, Ross's brother, is the lead singer of Canadian band From The Bridge (myspace.com/fromthebridgeband) who will also be performing.
