Ray Charles Honoured in Hometown

Published: 2007-12-11
Late great R'n'B and soul singer Ray Charles is being honoured in his hometown of Albany, Georgia with the erection of a bronze statue in his name.

Located in a new open space in downtown Albany, the rotating statue was mounted last Friday, December 7th in front of hundreds of people.

Charles was born in the city in 1930 and died three years ago. In 1979, his rendition of the song "Georgia on My Mind" became the official song of the state, almost two decades after he recorded it.
