Bono Receives Liberty Medal

Published: 2007-10-01
Bono has recently been awarded the 2007 Liberty Medal with the accompanying $100,000 prize for his work with DATA (Debt, AIDS, Trade, Africa), which the U2 singer co-founded to combat poverty and disease in Africa.

Mogauwane Mahloele of South Africa performed a traditional African song on the kora, a 21-string harp-lute used extensively in Africa. In honour of Bono's heritage, Morris Goldberg of Cape Town, South Africa performed on the Irish penny whistle during the ceremony. Joshua Stewart, a tenor from New Orleans who is studying at the Curtis Institute of Music, also performed "Make them Hear You" from Ragtime. The African Children's Choir and several other plays and poems were also performed.
