Sony Canada Buys Torontoís Hummingbird Centre

Published: 2007-09-10
Sony Canada has purchased Toronto's Hummingbird Centre which will now be called the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts. The purchase cost Sony Canada $10 million for the 20 year deal for naming rights. A complete renovation will start in June 2008 to upgrade the multimedia in the theatre with Sony products and create more of a concert venue atmosphere. Along with the theatre renovations, there will be a $75 million Arts & Heritage Centre and a 47-storey residential tower.

The facility opened in October 1960 as the O'Keefe Centre and in 1996 it was renamed the Hummingbird Centre after the Canadian software company Hummingbird Ltd.
