The "King of the High C's", Luciano Pavarotti, died last Thursday at 5am local time in his home in Modena, Italy; he was 71. Pavarotti was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year and had been undergoing further treatment last month with his wife Nicoletta, his 4 daughters, his sister Gabriela, and his nephews, relatives and friends constantly coming to his side.

Placido Domingo, who sang with Pavarotti many times during his career, said in a statement, "I always admired the God-given glory of his voice that unmistakable special timbre from the bottom up to the very top of the tenor range."

Pavarotti had been a singer all his life, often singing with his father, also a tenor, in the church choir. In one of his final statements Pavarotti said,"the opportunity to continue to celebrate the magic of a life dedicated to the arts...[it] fills me with pride and joy to have been able to promote my magnificent country abroad."

The funeral will be held Saturday inside Modena's cathedral, Mayor Giorgio Pighi told SkyTG24 as he left Pavarotti's home.
