Janis Joplin In The Movies

Published: 2004-04-14
The tragic life of '60s singer Janis Joplin is to be portrayed on the silver screen not once, but twice. Both films will span Joplin's life which was abruptly ended at the age of 27 by an accidental heroin overdose.

One of the upcoming films is entitled 'The Gospel According To Janis'. The movie will star Pink (real name Alecia Moore) as Joplin. Director Penelope Spheeris has had her sights set on making a film about the life of Janis Joplin for 15 years and even has the blessing of the Joplin estate. She chose Pink for the role after an audition that included a screen test and a performance of two Joplin songs. 'The Gospel According To Janis' is set to start filming in the summer.

In a cruel twist of fate, pop singer Pink will spar against Oscar winning actress Renee Zellwegger for the title of best Joplin impersonator. Zellwegger will be starring in the Paramount production 'Piece Of My Heart'. Apparently Zellwegger has been obsessed with Janis Joplin for many years and will also be producing the flick. Gary Felder, best known for films 'Runaway Jury' and 'Don't Say A Word' will be directing 'Piece Of My Heart'.

Janis Joplin is hailed by many as one of the greatest female singers of all time. Her distinct, wailing, raspy voice carried her to places most others could never reach; it even took her all the way to Woodstock. She put women at the forefront of music during a time when males dominated the scene. Her emotional blues-rock earned her a devout fan base when she was alive and continues to draw legions of young fans nearly 34 years after her death. She was larger than life and became immortal through her music. Only time will tell whether either film will do justice to the legend that is Janis Joplin.
