George Canyon: Canada's Country Idol

Published: 2004-04-09
And then there were six. Canadian country singer-songwriter George Canyon is still in the running for the title of Nashville Star.

Nashville Star has been referred to as a rougher version of American Idol. But in many ways Nashville Star is a better gauge for the talent and star potential of the contestants. It is true that both shows are largely a popularity contest, but the real talent will still come through in the end. While the Idol shows are designed to find the next pop star, the contestants are required to sing songs in genres outside of their strength and voice capabilities. Whereas, the Nashville Star show themes stay within the confines of country music. This week the show stretches the limits and focuses on the rock side of country music.

On the Idol shows the star hopefuls must choose their music from a list of approved songs; they do not supplement their performance in any way other than a few dance moves. On the other hand; on Nashville Star the performers accompany themselves on guitar or some other instrument and at least once during the competition the performers must showcase one of their own compositions.

Canadian fans can see Nashville Star on CMT on Sundays. Canadian viewers are not allowed to call their votes in, but it is not clear as to whether they are able to cast a vote via the internet at the USA Network website (www.usanetwork.com).

Whatever the outcome of the final show on May 1 and whether or not George Canyon is crowned the next Nashville Star, the Hopewell resident has done himself and his country proud and he can only help the country music scene in Canada.
