Coachella Music Festival Heats up the California Desert

Published: 2007-05-01
The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, held in Indio, California on a yearly basis, took place this past weekend at the Empire Polo Fields.

With 37 acts over a three-day period that spanned musical genres from alternative metal, indie rock, hip hop and trance, this year's festival had the privilege of being the setting for the first official reunion show for the newly reformed hard rock act Rage Against the Machine, whose greatly awaited set closed the event Sunday evening. With the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Bjrk respectively headlining the Saturday and Friday evenings prior to the festivals closing, the Coachella line-up was certainly filled with many impressive, A-list acts.

The heat did nothing to dissuade the over 60,000 music lovers who braved the California desert weather to see their favourite bands live, with even celebrities like Lindsay Lohan, Cameron Diaz and Kelly Osbourne seen in attendance at one point or another during the weekend.

Coachella not only allowed big name acts like Arcade Fire, Tisto and The Roots to strut their stuff to an audience of adoring fans and music industry personnel alike but also permitted up-and-comers like Lily Allen and newsmakers like the Arctic Monkeys and MSTRKRFT a venue to show whether or not they've been deserving of the buzz that's been surrounding them as of late. And as such, in its only eight years of existence, critics are already claiming that Coachella 2007 was the most powerful one yet, with a spirit and musical energy that has brought people together like nothing that's been seen before.
