Canadaís Music Sales Drop 35%, Lowest in the World

Published: 2007-04-27
In an increasing digital marketplace, it's no surprise that sales of physical CDs and music DVDs would fall. However, The Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA) never expected the unprecedented 35% sales drop already in the first quarter of 2007 making Canada in the most drastic decline in physical music sales in any country in the world. The music sales climate in Canada overall has even been tough on digital sales as the US attributes 17% of revenue to legal digital sales, Canada only has 6% revenue on legal music digital sales.

CRIA president told the Toronto Star, "There was no sign at Christmas that our early 2007 sales would be as bad as this...This is the largest ever annual decline in Canada's music market. It's like the Wild West up here."

Lack of proper legislation on legal music downloads and videos and music licensing in Canada is a factor, as in 2006, it was estimated that 1.3 billion unauthorized downloads occur in Canada each year. Digital music sales are not replacing the loss in CD and DVD sales as they are in countries with aggressive copyright protection laws banning file sharing, and punitive enforcement policies.

CRIA president Graham Henderson continues, "Musicians themselves, who are working for less than ever, are in a state of denial over the rights and wrongs of downloading and music property rights. And law agencies don't have the money, manpower or political backing to take action."

The CRIA is calling on the Canadian federal government to update the Copyright Act and to protect artists and other creators of intellectual property from the unauthorized use of their work on the internet. The initiative is supported by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, and organizations representing music and book publishers and the software and movie industries.

lol, even though im canadian, i think that they shouldn't be blaming the illegal downloads for the lost in sales. Even in the US, people download billions of songs and yet the US is still the at or near the top. People just don't like canadian music :[
