George Canyon Wins Big at East Coast Music Awards

The 2007 East Coast Music Awards were handed out Sunday night in a nationally televised broadcast on CBC live from Halifax's Metro Centre. George Canyon won the Sirius Satellite Radio Entertainer of the Year award, which made him the Fans' Choice for the third consecutive year, Canyon also won two additional awards for Video of the Year for "Drinkin' Thinkin" and Country Recording of the Year for Somebody Wrote Love.

In-Flight Safety, Joel Plaskett Emergency and JP Cormier also won three East Coast Music Awards each while Jill Barber closely followed with two awards.

The show capped off a four-day extravaganza of multi-genre musical performances, conference events and workshops that attracted more than 2,000 delegates from as far away as Europe, the United Kingdom, Germany and the US.

In addition, the Dr. Helen Creighton Lifetime Achievement Award was presented posthumously to legendary Nova Scotia vocalist Portia White, one of the great contralto vocalists in the history of Canadian classical music. There to receive her award was White's sister Yvonne White.
