Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep's next project? The adaptation of Abba's musical, Mamma Mia.

Last year we saw Meryl Streep take the stage as an alt-country singer in the critically acclaimed independent flick Prairie Home Companion. We will soon hear her again only this time singing a different tune. Creator and Film producer, Judy Craymer told Variety that "She was always at the top of our wish list", when referring to landing Meryl as an actress.

Meryl will play the roll of Donna, the mother of Sophie. The story carries out tunes by Abba as Sophie tries to find her birth father before she weds. The stage performance has been huge world wide, playing in 16 countries. Producers hope that the success will transcend to film.

Filming will start this year in London and Greece. The release date is said to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the musical which will be in 2009. Tom Hank's production company, Playtone has signed on to produce the film.
