Joss Stone Enlists a Mother's Help

Published: 2006-12-29
Last April when nineteen year old singer, Joss Stone started work on her third album she knew there was one person she needed to collaborate with, Lauryn Hill.

A member of the once critically acclaimed band, the Fugees, Hill has seven Grammy awards under her belt. It was no easy task enlisting this award wining "poet". Stone tried relentlessly to get a hold of Lauryn Hill's team to talk to them about a duet, but all her calls went unanswered. Stone could not accept that, so she called Lauryn Hill's mother. Who in the end convinced her daughter to work with Stone. Joss Stone explains why the call was necessary to MTV, "I couldn't get a hold of Lauryn, and there was no answer from her camp-I couldn't get a yes or a no. So I kept calling her mother." With her own mother's helping hand Hill contributed to the song "Music".

Another collaboration to look out for on the disc is one with Stone's favorite hip hop star, Common. Working on the album in Barbados with co-producer Raphael Saadiq (Mos Def, the Roots) the album should hit shelves this March.
