Sloan, Mobile Play Toronto Winterfest

Published: 2006-12-14
Just because the weather's cooling down is no reason to take the party inside. That's why Toronto's Winterfest is holding a couple of weekends of free outdoor concerts at Nathan Phillips Square in the dead of the winter season.

The first weekend, beginning Friday January 26, will feature an evening show by local pop R&B band the Philosopher Kings.

On Saturday concerts will occur all day beginning at 12:30 pm. The "On the Verge" set will feature up-and-coming bands including high energy pop rock band Lucid Dreams, indie rockers the Bicycles, the Jon Levine Band featuring the former Philosopher King, and local indie rock trio the Junction. The night will be capped off by a headlining performance by one of Canada's favourite power pop groups, Sloan.

Sunday will feature daytime shows including NQ Arbuckle, jazz folk singer-songwriter Jill Barber, country rockers Jon-Rae and the River and the dark bluegrass trio Elliott Brood.

The following Friday, February 2 will feature a headlining evening show by Montreal rockers Mobile, whose single "Out of My Head" hit radio and Much Music with full force earlier this year.

Saturday will feature a day full of "Pop Friendly" performances by Spiral Beach, Quebec City quintet The Suits XL, Newfoundland singer-songwriter Brian Byrne and an all woman Canadian supergroup Shaye with members Kim Stockwood, Damhnait Doyle and Tara MacLean. The evening will be headlined by another Canadian supergroup, the New Pornographers.

The Wintefest lineup will be concluded on the Sunday with a set of Canadian songstresses including Patrizia, Melissa McClelland, Lori Nuic and Oh Susanna.

Check the city of Toronto's official website for more details. And did I mention that all these shows are free?
