Burton Cummings Joins Theatre Celebrations

Published: 2006-12-11
The centennial celebrations of the Burton Cummings Theatre will be headlined by none other than the man who bears its name.

The Winnipeg theatre, originally named the Walker Theatre, was christened the Burton Cummings Theatre in 2002. On February 17, Cummings will join other entertainers in honouring the venue for its 100th birthday.

Erected in 1907, the theatre hosted everything from concerts and vaudeville to silent film until 1945, when it became a movie theatre. It wasn't until 1991 that it reopened its doors to performing arts.

The theatre was renamed when Cummings became the theatre's new benefactor. The February 17 celebration will also strive to raise funds for restoration projects as well as try to eliminate the theatre's debt.
