Published: 2004-03-30
It has been nearly 20 years since the legendary music star Quincy Jones mounted a project of global proportions. Jones who is a father of seven children wants to focus his efforts on the group who is forgotten and neglected in times of war and violence – the children.

On May 16 Jones will have a multi act concert called We Are the Future; the proceeds of which are going to aid the children in areas of violence around the world. The concert will be held at the Circus Maximus in Rome, the sight of some of the bloodiest acts in history all in the name of sport – it's where the gladiators did battle.

With a little over a month before the show, Jones is still finalizing acts, but the line up so far is a who's who in music and entertainment. Norah Jones, Josh Groban, LL Cool J, Jay-Z, Herbie Hancock, latin star Juanes, and the recipient of the Music Cares award for his humanitarian work Sting have all committed to the We Are the Future project. Along with the musicians dancer Savion Glover, Cirque de Soleil, Stomp, Oprah Winfrey, Mohammad Ali, and Chris Tucker has joined the event. Jones is trying to book Jakob Dylan, Ben Taylor and Stevie Wonder as well.

We Are the Future will also feature 2,000 children from around the world ages five to eight who will be dressed in local costumes and linked together by holding hands, sporting events, and government officials along with the music.

Over one million people are expected to attend the event in Rome with millions more watching it on the television. Jones is hoping to make We Are the Future a truly global event. He is talking with networks including Arabic broadcaster Al Jazeera to broadcast the event.

At 71 Quincy Jones credits his own children as giving him the energy to mount such a massive project. We Are the Future is the most ambitious project Jones has undertaken in his musical career.
