mtvU Scouts for Up-and-Comers

Published: 2006-11-20
MtvU's "Best Music on Campus" contest highlights the successes of up-and-coming bands toiling on college campuses across America.

Likely noticing the successes of bands promoting themselves online, the music network created their own site where bands and artists can upload profiles, pictures and of course music for fans and fans-to-be to check them out.

Unlike other networking sites, there's a more visible chance for a payoff on the "Best Music on Campus" site. Several record labels, three independent labels and one major label, are offering record contracts and help with promotion and music videos to a band on the site. Additionally, every week an artist is featured as "Artist of the Week" on the site and receives extra promotion on the network.

Indie hip-hop label Definitive Juxtaposition or Def Jux is offering a digital EP release, a video/single collaboration with Boston rapper Mr. Lif and a video premiere on mtvU. Indie rock label Epitaph Records is offering a similar package with an EP and video premiere as well as an opening slot on mtvU's Spring Break '07 and an opening slot for an Epitaph artist. Epitaph is home to bands like Matchbook Romance, The Offspring and NOFX. Pop-punk indie label Drive-Thru Records is also offering a video and EP deal for one of the artists on the site.

But the big prize is a record deal with major label and Sony BMG subsidiary Epic Records. The label that is home to bands like The Fray, Fiona Apple, Modest Mouse and Tori Amos is offering up an album release including distribution and promotion, two music videos, performances on mtvU tours and events, a documentary series on mtvU and a spot on Late Night with Conan O'Brien.

Winners of all the contests will be unveiled in 2007.
