John Mellencamp looks to his past for new inspiration

Published: 2006-10-25
John Mellencamp is ready to premiere his brand new album to the public, but not without dipping a little into the past. Mellencamp's new album will be his first of original material since 2001's Cuttin' Heads and will be titled Freedom Road. Mellencamp is obviously not a stranger to Americana themed music and this album will be no different. The first single, "Our Country" is a very patriotic song about his homeland, the United States of America.

According to Mellencamp, the new album sounds very 1966, but with a 2006 twist to it. Inspired by the 1960s garage rock movement, Freedom Road, is taken from that period in particular, as he tells Billboard.com that he did everything he could do from that era.

"Jim Crow" and "Cigarettes" are two of the tracks off the upcoming album. The new set is due by next year with a tentative date of January 30 off of Universal Republic.
