CBGB Finale with Patti Smith

Published: 2006-10-02
Singer-songwriter and punk feminist Patti Smith will play one of the last gigs at New York's famed live music club CBGB.

The club has been long lauded as the birth place of punk rock giving starts to many of the New York punk scene's brightest stars including the Ramones and Blondie. Patti Smith played CBGB for the first time in 1975.

Though originally a Country Bluegrass and Blues club (hence the name CBGB) the club developed such a large punk following because they only had one requirement to play there, that a band could only play original tunes and no covers.

Recently the club's owner Hilly Krystal was having conflict with the club's landlord the Bowery Resident's Committee, forcing the club to close down on October 30, 2006. It was later reported that Krystal plans to move the club to Las Vegas in 2008.
