Sarah Harmer, K'Naan Perform At Polaris Party

Canada's Polaris Music Prize Gala is shaping up to be quite the party September 18 at Toronto's Phoenix Concert Theatre.

According to ChartAttack, "CBC personality and Moxy Fruvous frontman Jian Ghomeshi will host the inaugural Polaris Music Prize ceremony to honour the best Canadian album of the past year."

The prize has been compared to the UK's prestigious Mercury Prize which was awarded to the Arctic Monkeys last week. Much like the Mercury Prize, the Polaris Prize winner will receive a cash prize ($20 000) but the real prize will be the publicity gained by the win.

A selection of music media will choose the Polaris winner, who according to ChartAttack, include representatives from the Montreal Mirror, NOW, Musique Plus, CBC Radio, and the Toronto Star to name a few.

Five of the Polaris finalists, Final Fantasy, K'Naan, Cadence Weapon, Malajube and Sarah Harmer, will all perform at the gala though all ten finalists will be in attendance. For the next few weeks you can pick up a CD with tunes by those and the other five finalists, Broken Social Scene, The Deadly Snakes, Metric, The New Pornographers and Wolf Parade, at music stores around the country.
